Creating Families, 4 Paws At A Time Every day innocent pets are left homeless and abandoned in Chicagoland. Adopt-A-Pet has found loving homes for over 14,000 of those cats and dogs. If you are looking for a family pet, consider adopting a wonderful pet from Adopt-A-Pet. Most of our cats and dogs are kept in foster homes, where they live as part of a family. Not only is this beneficial for the animal, but it also helps us create a purrfect match between an animal and a prospective adopter.

Petfinder
www.petfinder.org
On Petfinder you can search 225,651 adoptable pets with our advanced search or our quick search which will locate shelters and rescue groups currently caring for adoptable pets. You can brose our resource library and learn more about how-to care for your pet. You can post classified ads for lost or found pets, pets wanted, and pets needing homes. You can sign up to be a volunteer to help your local shelter or rescue group. The pet adoption experience at different types of shelters can be vastly different, so take the time to visit the home page of your local groups to see which you might enjoy working with most. Open access shelters take in all stray animals and are usually county or city sheers. Humane societies are private facilities. Some are open access and others are limited. Foster groups are usually volunteer foster parents who don't have a physical location only. Points to consider: Is a home visit required prior to adoption? What is the adoption fee? Are pet introductions by appointment?

NoPuppyMills.com
www.nopuppymills.com
Is dedicated to educating the public (that's you!) about the ins and outs of the commercial dog industry in America. I began my site in 1998 because I saw a total lack of understanding on the part of breeders, rescuers and pet owners. A long-time misconception about mills had to be addressed, and the legal side of the industry had to be exposed. We've all heard about the filthy, illegal, back-woods breeders with hundreds of dogs living in squalor, but in 1998 I learned that most people had no idea that puppy mills are actually legal and regulated, licensed, and inspected by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Training young gun dogs in my puppy head start program involves teaching the "basics" in the yard. The key to any good field dog is bird exposure at an early age. For the past nine years as a pro-trainer, I have trained hundreds of AKC (American Kennel Club) Junior Hunters & started gun dogs. My previous veterinary assistant job lasted 14 years, so I am always sharing emergency field aid with my hunting clients. I believe in instilling the joy of the field in a young dog...something that will last a lifetime. You do not need to be heavy handed to get the best results in the field. Once you understand how to train your dog yourself, you can really get to the business of enjoying your hunting experience. Trained retrievers conserve game ... they are something to be proud of.

Most of our work at present is in helping owners to understand their pets better so that they don’t need to consider options such as re-homing or destruction as a result of their behavior.
